Worth it – if you’re looking for a good scare, some creepy history, or a reason to stay away from anywhere ever touched by the Salem Witch Trials in an minute way, then you’ll want to check out The Conjuring.
The Overview
When a family of six moves to a creep old farmhouse in New England you know they are in for a less than pleasant housewarming. That’s just the nature of New England, it’s old, it’s haunted, and the Devil lurks in every dark seam of those old houses. The Perron’s could have used such knowledge of the area because they might have avoided ended up with their story being told in The Conjuring. The film, which is based on actual events, follows the Perron family and paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren as they deal with the demonic possession of the new Perron home.
What makes The Conjuring scary is that it is based on actual events. The family is real, the house is real, the paranormal investegators are real. Hell, you can go see their museum of all the creepy stuff they’ve taken from their investigations. Through the whole thing, no matter how much it feels like a scary movie akin to The Exorcist or Poltergeist, it’s just a little extra creepy because of that “BASED ON THE TRUE CASE FILES OF THE WARRENS” bit. That being said, it’s still a movie. Some scares can be predicted based on audio cues, but even when you know it’s coming, you still don’t know what’s coming.
I’ve never been one to watch scary movies, especially in movie theaters, so this was a new experience for me. It was exciting because of the fear factor, and the casting was done well. Sure, none of the actors resemble the real people they’re based on, but their acting draws you in, making you feel more frightful for everything that happens to this family. The Conjuring is a quality scare that will have you checking every dark corner of your house when you get home. Oh, and if you’re afraid of dolls, you may want to bring a few friends with you to see this one.
